Used to empower magical consciousness since ancient times, candle magic is ubiquitous to witchcraft and one of the simplest forms of spell casting. Considered sympathetic magic, it's easy to light a candle, declare your intention, and cast it out into the arms of the Universe to influence reality.

3 key principles guide candle magic:

- Establish your goal or desired outcome.
- Envision the outcome you desire.
- Focus your willful intent to drive, empower and manifest the outcome you desire.

Always used a new candle for each ritual or spell. A burning candle picks up energetic vibrations from the environment which may negatively interfere with intended outcomes.

You may choose to inscribe your candle with the person's name for whom the ritual or spell is being performed, to actively dedicate the candle for your magical intention, or to empower your candle with an intention-filled sigil or symbol. Inscribing can be performed using a nail, quill, the tip of your athame, pin, needle or other ritual object chosen specifically for the spell you will cast.

There may be times when you may want to load your candle. To load your candle, dig out a small hole in the bottom of the candle and load it with herbs, spelled paper, personal concerns or other spell specific objects. Melt the removed wax in a spoon to refill the hole and seal the bottom of the candle once the hole is loaded.

Anoint and dress your candle with oils, herbs or herb powders as desired when preparing your candle for ritual. Rub oil on the candle toward you (or up) to draw your desires towards you. Rub oil on the candle away from you (or down) to repel, send away or reverse malicious magic. Dress double action candles beginning from the middle, going up from the center and down from the center.

Seal your intention into the candle by laying hands on it, kissing or tapping the candle on your altar 3 (or 9) times. You may also additionally seal the candle with words meaningful to your purpose.

Light your candle with a wooden match or from the flame of a lit shamash taper (a "helper" taper prepared prior to the ritual used to light other candles). As you light your candle state your spell or ritual intention. Once the candle is lit, you may choose to circle your hands at a safe distance (so as not to burn yourself) over the flame 3 (or 9) times, circling clockwise to attract or counterclockwise to repel, send away or reverse.

Observe the way the candle burns for signs welling up from deeper realms of consciousness. Signs may reside withiin the nature of the burning flame (pyromancy), how the wax melts (ceromancy), the remnants left after the candle fully burns out (also ceromancy), and the characteristics of any smoke produced (capnomancy). Signs may also be found by observing any unusual characteristics made in the wick as the candle burns. Especially note if the wick forms a knot or twin flames. Lean to your own wisdom and life experience to interpret the signs in congruence with the thoughts elicited and drawn into your awareness and mind.

Let your candle burn itself out for best results. If you must extinguish your candle, do not blow your candle out, use a candle snuffer instead.

Should there be any remnants of your magical ritual candle, you may discard these remnants by burying them where they will never be found or consign them to a fire outside (a bonfire, for example).
